This book had its beginning in 1979, when, after the retirement of W.V. Quine, I took over the responsibility for teaching Philosophy 140, the introductory logic course at Harvard. For thirty years Quine had used his own Methods of Logic as the textbook, a practice I initially followed. However, the later editions of Methods (as opposed to the second edition, from which I had learned logic in 1966), contained much that I thought pedagogically less effective than it might be, and I began to supplement the text with notes of my own. By the early 1980s, my notes had become the textbook for the course, and it is those notes, revised several times in the years since, that make up this book. This text provides a straightforward, lively but rigorous, introduction to truth-functional and predicate logic, complete with lucid examples and incisive exercises, for which Warren Goldfarb is renowned.
